Introduction to Scaling Laravel Applications

Last quarter, our team discovered that our Laravel application was hitting a scalability wall. We had scaled from 1M to 10M requests per day, but our database connection pool was maxed out, and our response times were suffering. We tried several approaches to solve this problem, but most of them failed. Here's what we learned.

The Problem with Database Connection Pools

When you're dealing with a large number of requests, your database connection pool can become a bottleneck. We were using the default Laravel database connection pool, which was not designed to handle our scale. We tried increasing the pool size, but that only led to more connections being opened, which in turn led to slower response times.

Load Balancing to the Rescue

My colleague, Jake, suggested that we try using load balancing to distribute our traffic across multiple servers. We set up a load balancer using HAProxy and added two more servers to our cluster. This immediately reduced our response times by 30%. However, we soon realized that our database was still a bottleneck.
