When I first started working on renewable energy projects, I realized that optimizing energy grids was crucial for reducing our carbon footprint. Last quarter, our team discovered that demand response strategies could significantly impact the efficiency of these grids. Here's what I learned when implementing OpenADR 2.0 and Verdigris in our project.
Understanding OpenADR 2.0
OpenADR 2.0 is an open standard for automated demand response. It allows utilities and grid operators to send signals to buildings and homes, which can then adjust their energy usage in real-time. I was surprised to find that most docs skip the hard part - implementing it in production. When I first tried this, it broke because I didn't account for the buffering time required for signal propagation.
